NAVA Gamer Gathering, June 29th: "Random Encounters"

NAVA = North Atlantic Videogame Aficionados. This is a FREE event bringing gamers together for competition, trading, and chatter.

Previously at NAVA...

- We celebrated the what the world of STAR WARS has brought to videogamers.

- The 6pm tournament was Masters of Teras Kasi (SORRY) on the PlayStation. Grand master Terry B won the event for the $20 gift certificate.

- The arcade challenge was Atari's STAR WARS vector game. The high score was 66515 scored by Will, earning that coveted house champion $20 gift certificate.

- Gamers, collectors and friends shared their recent adventures and sold or traded their goods.

In This Month's NAVA: We haven't done a "Random Retro" tournament since pre-COVID. It's time to find a post-COVID champion since the world is so much different now. Around that 6pm event (outlined below) the theme of the day is RANDOM. We love that rogue-likes gained popularity in the last decade but what did we have before then? Come and play the many systems and kiosks we'll have available to everyone throughout the course of the day and find out.

Arcade Challenge: In 1984 Namco released a rogue-like arcade game called Tower of Druaga. While the game wasn't a big hit in the USA, it garnered a following, was ported to numerous game consoles, even had a GameCube remake. With its sprawling 60 floors of action, every game is a little different since the mazes are randomized with each game. Be the best at this game on this one day by logging the highest score on our arcade cabinet by 9pm and win a nifty $20 gift certificate. Arcade challenge games are set to FREE PLAY all day, but please remember to let everyone get a shot. If you get the high score, move on, and no hogging the cabinet! Also if you have won last month’s arcade challenge you are not eligible to win this month’s challenge.

6PM Tournament: Ever play RANDOM RETRO? This game was created by Digital Press and was once a stape at the store, it's also been featured at the National Videogame Museum and at its displays at E3 and Pax East in the good old days. The concept is simple. A simple Atari 2600 stick with its four directions and one button, a bracket tournament, and a random head to head game chosen for every matchup. That means you won't know what game you're about to compete in, nor does your opponent, and that game will not be repeated for any other players in the tournament. Some find it nerve-wracking, but everyone finds it fun. Will you find it "a chance to dominate"? Let's find out. Sign-ups begin at 3pm, the tournament starts after 6pm in this first-come, first-served and as always at NAVA, FREE-to-join tournament.

Remember, you can bring a box or two of your trade goodies. We'll help you administer sales and get you set up somewhere in the store to sell your goods, there is no charge for this perk, NAVA is the time for trading! Also, if you have a Digital Press or NAVA t-shirt, wear them for a for an additional 5% discount on the store's already low-low prices! If you don't have a Digital Press t-shirt, ask us how to buy one while you're here. It's NAVA time, people! Let us all GAME ON.
