NAVA Gamer's Gathering, August 26th: "25 Years of Mario Kart"
NAVA = North Atlantic Videogame Aficionados. This is a FREE event bringing gamers together for competition, trading, and chatter.
Previously at NAVA...
- In our last episode, we didn't want to work, we wanted to bang on the drum all day. To be more specific, we banged on the videogame versions of bongos and drums. Maracas made a cameo appearance.
- The 6pm tournament was Donkey Konga on Gamecube. Our champion was Aristotle, who proved to be the most rhythmic in this crowded tournament.
- The arcade challenge was the game Bongo (it's not a drum game). Chris A scored an incredible 157,260 points and earned the $20 prize.
- Games and systems traded hands between attendees who brought their own trade boxes.
See it all in our photo gallery section at the store's website and feel free to comment!

In This Month's NAVA: Well, this should make you feel old - on August 27th, Mario Kart celebrates its TWENTY FIFTH anniversary! That's right, back in the days when Nirvana, Roseanne and Aladdin were household names, this Super Nintendo game was unleashed to the world. Yet another example of the genius of Shigeru Miyamoto, Super Mario Kart was unique in that "kart racing" really hadn't been done before, and we were introduced to not only an original concept, but a great game, with our favorite videogame characters. Nintendo has kept this franchise karting along ever since, with the most recent update to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Switch.
We will celebrate the anniversary by showcasing several favorite versions of Mario Kart as well as some great (Crash Team Racing for PlayStation) and not so great (Atari Karts for Jaguar) attempts at recreating the magic in a different universe. Come in and kart with us as we dash around the many tracks with tiny vehicles!
Arcade challenge! Imagine a top-down version of Mario Kart. Now imagine that there are no Nintendo characters, power-ups, or karts and what do you have? Why it's 1991's "Drift Out" by Visco Games, of course! Be the best at the game on this one day by logging the highest score on our arcade cabinet by 9pm and win a nifty $20 gift certificate and possibly get your name added to the "House Champion" tournament plaque on the Wall of Fame just above the arcade section of the store. Arcade challenge games are set to FREE PLAY all day, but please remember to let everyone get a shot. If you get the high score, move on, and no hogging the cabinet! Also if you have won last month’s arcade challenge you are no eligible to win this month’s challenge.
Tournament! We've featured Super Mario Kart many times over the years but we've never held a tournament for this original game. You've had TWENTY FIVE YEARS to practice! Are you the best... yet? Let's find out. Sign-ups begin at 3pm, the tournament starts around 6pm and its first-come, first-served in this FREE-to-join tournament.
Remember to get your trade boxes in order so we can all buy, sell and trade together. Wear your NAVA or Digital Press t-shirt for the maximum discount on store purchases. Also, bring your Nintendo 3DS to share street passes... it's NAVA time!
