NAVA Gamer's Gathering, January 25th: "The Crash of '83"

NAVA = North Atlantic Videogame Aficionados. This is a FREE event bringing gamers together for competition, trading, and chatter.

Previously at NAVA...
- In our last episode, attendees, store personnel and friends and family of Digital Press Videogames celebrated the holidays with a traditional "Secret Santa" re-gifting event.
- Someone got a brand new PSP Vita and several games! Someone else got a used "Hip Hop Dance" for the Wii.
- The arcade challenge was Taito's "Water Ski". Chris A walked away with the $20 prize.
- Games and systems traded hands between attendees who brought their own trade boxes.

This month! Where were you in 1983?

Some of you are too young to remember - or weren't even born yet - but for those of us who lived through the year, it was a memorable one. Ronald Reagan was president. In music, we had "Every Breath You Take", "Billie Jean", "Down Under", "Total Eclipse of The Heart", "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" and "Come On Eileen". The "Just Say No" anti-drug campaign debuted. Popular movies included Star Wars: Return of The Jedi, Scarface, Flashdance, WarGames and Risky Business. We all watched the final episode of M.A.S.H. and maybe a little too much A-Team, Dallas, Dynasty and Magnum PI. In sports, big winners included The Oakland Raiders, Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia 76'ers and New York Islanders (their 4th Stanley Cup in a row). Oh yeah, 1983 is also considered the year of videogaming's great crash.

If you've got attire that suits the year, wear it!

Arcade challenge! There were so many classic arcade games launched in 1983 - Crystal Castles, Elevator Action, Gyruss, Mappy, Spy Hunter, Star Wars and Tapper to name a few. For our day-long challenge we've chosen one of 1983's sleeper hits "Roc 'n Rope" by Konami. Be the best at the game on this one day by logging the highest score on our arcade cabinet by 9pm and win a nifty $20 gift certificate and possibly get your name added to the "House Champion" tournament plaque on the Wall of Fame just above the arcade section of the store. Arcade challenge games are set to FREE PLAY all day, but please remember to let everyone get a shot. If you get the high score, move on, and no hogging the cabinet!

Tournament! One of 1983's great legacies is the launch of the "Mario Bros" series. Just a few years before American gamers got to see the SUPER Mario Bros destroy bad guys by smashing them from above, the arcade game featured Mario and Luigi in heated competition bashing bad guys from below. The tournament will feature head-to-head Mario vs. Luigi battles in a round robin until just one Mario or Luigi is standing. Who will it be? Sign-ups begin at 3pm, the tournament starts around 6pm and it's first-come, first-served in this FREE-to-join tournament.

Remember to get your trade boxes in order so we can all buy, sell and trade together. Wear your NAVA or Digital Press t-shirt for the maximum discount on store purchases. Also, bring your Nintendo 3DS to share street passes... it's NAVA time!
