NAVA Gamer's Gathering, August 31st: "How To Take Down A Giant"

NAVA = North Atlantic Videogame Aficionados. This is a FREE event bringing gamers together for competition, trading, and chatter.

Previously at NAVA...
- We paid homage to the "second generation" of game consoles, which was the first generation to accept cartridges: Channel F, Intellivision, Atari 2600, ColecoVision and Vectrex.
- The arcade challenge was Pole Position and someone got $20.
- The 6pm tournament was SNAFU for the Intellivison, David R snaked his was to the championship.
- Games and systems traded hands between attendees who brought their own trade boxes.

See it all in our photo gallery section at the store's website and feel free to comment!

This month! This month's theme is all about the systems that defied the big boys. We were inspired by the Ouya Kickstarter campaign, their charter, and their unprecedented appearance "outside" of E3 this summer. The system hasn't quite hit its stride yet, but here's your chance to get a hands-on experience to see for yourself. We'll likely be running emulators on the system for most of the day, but there are plenty of indie titles loaded on our system that you may find entertaining. In addition, previous Davids in the Goliath world that we will showcase include Trip Hawkins' 3DO and Epoch's Cassette Vision. Actually we'll bust out a Super Cassette Vision since it has detachable controllers and a better variety of games.

We've added yet another arcade game. In fact, it is an electro-mechanical arcade game called "Ice Cold Beer", and manufactured by Taito in 1983. Try it out, it's incredibly addictive and requires nerves of steel. We've posed a challenge to anyone who can get to level 10: FREE T-Shirt!

Arcade challenge! It's you against an entire alien race as they rush to invade Earth in Astro Invader. We're going old-school in this month's arcade challenge, can your tiny ship take out the most enemies at NAVA? Be the best at the game on this one day by logging the highest score on our arcade cabinet by 9pm and win a nifty $20 gift certificate and possibly get your name added to the "House Champion" tournament plaque on the Wall of Fame just above the arcade section of the store. Arcade challenge games are set to FREE PLAY all day, but please remember to let everyone get a shot. If you get the high score, move on, and no hogging the cabinet!

Tournament! To showcase the Ouya a bit, we've chosen what we feel is one of the best "indy" games that isn't an emulator. The game is called BombSquad. It's a cross between Bomberman and Poy Poy and it's a 4-player free-for-all! For more info on the game, see http://www.froemling.net/apps/bombsquad. Sign-ups begin at 3pm, the tournament starts around 6pm and it's first-come, first-served in this FREE-to-join tournament.

Remember to bring things to trade! Also wear your NAVA or Digital Press t-shirt for the maximum discount on store purchases. Finally, bring your Nintendo 3DS to share street passes... it's NAVA time!
